Breaking down the cocktail party: Attentional modulation of cerebral audiovisual speech processing

چکیده
Recent studies utilizing electrophysiological speech envelope reconstruction have sparked renewed interest in the cocktail party effect by showing that auditory neurons entrain to selectively attended speech. Yet, neural networks of attention naturalistic audiovisual settings with multiple sound sources remain poorly understood. We collected functional brain imaging data while participants viewed video clips lifelike dialogues concurrent distracting background. Dialogues were presented a full-factorial design, comprising task (listen vs. ignore them), quality and semantic predictability. used univariate analyses combination multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) study modulations activity related attentive processing found cause distinct spatiotemporal modulation profiles distributed cortical areas including sensory frontal-control networks. Semantic coherence modulated attention-related activation patterns earliest stages processing, suggesting cortex is involved high-level processing. Our results corroborate views emphasize dynamic nature attention, task-specificity context as cornerstones underlying neuro-cognitive mechanisms.

Cocktail Party Processing
Speech segregation, or the cocktail party problem, has proven to be extremely challenging. This presentation describes a computational auditory scene analysis (CASA) approach to the cocktail party problem. This approach performs auditory segmentation and grouping in a two-dimensional time-frequency representation that encodes proximity in frequency and time, periodicity, amplitude modulation, a...
متن کاملImproved Cocktail - Party Processing
The human auditory system is able to focus on one speech signal and ignore other speech signals in an auditory scene where several conversations are taking place. This ability of the human auditory system is referred to as the “cocktail-party effect”. This property of human hearing is partly made possible by binaural listening. Interaural time differences (ITDs) and interaural level differences...
متن کاملOlder adults show impaired modulation of attentional alpha oscillations: Evidence from the cocktail party
Auditory attention is critical for selective listening to speech from a single talker in a multi-talker environment (e.g., the cocktail party problem, Cherry, 1953). This type of listening is notoriously more difficult and more poorly encoded to longterm memory in older adults than in young adults (Tun, O’Kane, & Wingfield, 2002). Recent work by Payne et al. (2016) in young adults demonstrated ...
متن کاملSeparable representations for cocktail party processing
Perceptual parsing of a complex acoustic scene requires the following ingredients: (a) a representation that is “separable” in the sense that it allows patterns to be split into parts that belong to diverse sources, (b) rules and cues to guide the partition, and (c) processes that can make sense of the partitioned information in the event that the partition was imperfect and the partitioned inf...
متن کاملAuditory attentional control and selection during cocktail party listening.
In realistic auditory environments, people rely on both attentional control and attentional selection to extract intelligible signals from a cluttered background. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine auditory attention to natural speech under such high processing-load conditions. Participants attended to a single talker in a group of 3, identified by the target talker's pitc...
